The Same Supplement Can Cost 31× More Per Day (2026 Data)

Key finding: Across 730 products in 116 supplement categories, the cost to take the same supplement every day varies up to 31.4× (Boswellia) depending on brand and form. And in 70% of categories (80 of 115), the cheapest product by sticker price is not the cheapest per day — because servings-per-container and dose-per-serving swing the real cost far more than the price on the bottle.

Why the cheapest bottle usually isn't the cheapest supplement

Shoppers optimize for the number on the shelf, which is the wrong number. Two bottles at the same sticker price can differ 3–5× in real cost once you account for how many days each one lasts and how much active ingredient each dose delivers. In our data this happens in 70% of categories.

So does paying more buy you anything?

A 31× spread only matters if the expensive end is delivering something. We hold the two datasets needed to check: what each product costs per day, and whether it appears in a third-party certifier's registry. Comparing across categories would only measure which supplements are expensive, so each category is split at its own median cost per day and the two halves are compared against each other.

Paying up moves the odds by 2.4 percentage points. The expensive half of a category is verified 8.3% of the time against 5.9% for the cheap half. That is a real difference and a small one: buying the pricier product still leaves you with roughly a 92% chance it is in no registry at all. Even the single most expensive product in a category is verified only 12.8% of the time (14 of 109).

And it does not buy a better dose. Across the 205 products where the label dose can be compared to the clinically studied one, the pricier half of each category hits the studied dose 67% of the time and the cheaper half 71% — the cheap half marginally ahead, and the difference is not statistically significant (Fisher p = 0.185). Price carries no information about whether a product contains the amount that was tested.

Which is the whole argument for ranking on cost per effective dose rather than on price. If the premium reliably bought verification or dosing, the expensive shelf would be a reasonable shortcut. It does not, so the only defensible way to choose is to work out what each product actually costs to take at the amount the trials used — which is what every comparison table on this site does.

Where the spread comes from, and which end to trust

A 31× range is not brands being greedy at one end and generous at the other. Three mechanical things drive almost all of it, and each is visible on the label if you know to look.

  • Servings per container. The single biggest lever, and the one the sticker price hides completely. A $25 bottle with 240 servings is cheaper per day than a $12 bottle with 30. This is why the cheapest bottle is not the cheapest supplement in 70% of the categories we track.
  • Dose per serving. Two products at the same price per capsule are not the same price per gram if one carries twice the active. Normalising to the studied dose is the only way to compare them, and it routinely reverses the ranking.
  • Form and standardisation. A standardised extract costs more to make than milled root, and a well-absorbed salt costs more than a poorly absorbed one. Some of the premium at the top of a category is buying a genuinely different material - which is exactly why cost per effective dose, not per milligram, is the comparison that survives.

That last point is the honest qualifier on everything above. The premium does not buy verification reliably and does not buy dosing at all, but within some categories it does buy a better form. The way to tell the difference is to check what the product is standardised to before deciding the expensive one is a waste - and where a label states no standardisation, there is nothing to pay extra for.

Method: cost per day is computed from the catalogue price and the label's own serving size, normalised to the active-ingredient amount used in clinical trials rather than per pill or per serving. The certification comparison splits each category at its own median cost per day and compares the halves to each other, because comparing across categories would measure which supplements are expensive rather than whether paying up inside one gets you more. Certification status comes from matching every product against the complete public US registries - NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified and Informed Sport - and the dose comparison is the audit's own, tested with a Fisher exact test. What this cannot tell you: whether a product is good. Registry absence means nobody independent has checked it, not that it failed, and a cheap product hitting the studied dose may still be poorly absorbed. Prices also move constantly - every figure here is a snapshot at the verification date above, and the retailer's price at checkout is the one that counts.
