What does each program check?
| Program | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| NSF Certified for Sport | Checks the label and tests each certified lot for banned substances. It is the program athletes use. |
| USP Verified | Checks that the bottle holds the ingredients on the label in the stated amounts, that contaminants stay under set limits, and that it is made to quality standards. |
| NSF/ANSI 173 | Checks that what the label says is in the bottle, with no hidden ingredients and no unsafe levels of contaminants. It does not screen for banned substances. |
ConsumerLab runs a different kind of check. In the method for its B-vitamin review, it buys products off the shelf and sends them to labs that are not told what they are testing. A single-ingredient B vitamin passes only if it holds 100% to 150% of the amount on the label. A failed product is retested at a second lab. A product can pass there without being on a USP or NSF list.
How to check your own bottle
- Look for the USP Verified mark or the NSF mark on the bottle.
- Search NSF’s list or USP’s list for the exact product name. On NSF, search the maker’s company name if the brand name finds nothing, as with NatureWise (Heartwise Incorporated).
- Match the strength and type. Nature Made has USP-listed and unlisted B12 products side by side, so “Nature Made” alone is not enough.
- Read the Supplement Facts for the mcg of B12 in one serving. Most adults need far less than 1,000 mcg; see the dosage guide.

Questions
Is NatureWise vitamin B12 NSF certified?
Yes. NSF’s list has “Naturewise Vitamin B12 1000mcg Softgels” under NSF/ANSI 173. NSF files it under the company name Heartwise Incorporated, so a search for “NatureWise” as the company finds nothing. Search the product name, or “Heartwise”. We read the listing on November 3, 2026.
Is Nature Made vitamin B12 third-party tested?
Some of it. USP lists the Nature Made 1,000 mcg Fast Dissolve tablet and its 1,000 mcg softgels, plus the Zero Sugar and Extra Strength gummies. We did not find the 1,000 mcg Time Release tablet or the regular 1,000 mcg gummies on USP’s list. Read the exact product name.
Which tested vitamin B12 is methylcobalamin?
Of the products we checked, Thorne Vitamin B12. It is on NSF/ANSI 173 and NSF Certified for Sport. The other methylcobalamin pills we checked, Nutricost and Jarrow, are on no public list we searched.
Does “third-party tested” on an Amazon listing mean it is certified?
No. A brand can hire any lab and print the phrase, and it does not say what the lab checked. A listing on USP’s or NSF’s website names the exact product. If a brand only says “tested”, ask for the certificate of analysis for your lot.
How do I pick a dose?
Adults need 2.4 mcg a day, and the usual pill holds 1,000 mcg because only a small share is absorbed. See the B12 dosage guide.
