How to compare B12 prices

  1. Compare cost a day: divide the price by the servings in the bottle. A $10 bottle of 100 pills is 10 cents a day; a $30 bottle of 60 is 50 cents a day.
  2. Check the serving. Most B12 pills are one a day. Thorne’s label allows 1 to 3 capsules a day; one is the dose most people need.
  3. Look for a named testing program, such as USP Verified or an NSF listing you can look up. “Third-party tested” with no program named cannot be checked.
  4. Buy the dose you need. Most adults need 2.4 mcg a day, and one 1,000 mcg pill covers people who need a supplement. How much B12 a day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a B12 supplement cost a month?

At list price, a 1,000 mcg pill a day costs from about $2.00 a month (Nutricost) to $12.00 (Thorne).

Is a cheap B12 as good as an expensive one?

Often, yes. Cheap and pricey pills use the same few forms of B12, and no form has been shown to work better (NIH). A higher price can buy an outside lab check, a form you like or a bigger bottle. More in methylcobalamin vs cyanocobalamin.

Is 1,000 mcg or 5,000 mcg better value?

Per mcg, 5,000 mcg looks cheaper. But your body takes in a smaller share of a bigger dose, so 1,000 mcg covers most people (why). If your doctor wants a higher dose, NOW Methyl B-12 5000 mcg is in the table above, and Solgar Methylcobalamin 5000 mcg is another choice. Read about high-dose safety.
