The human evidence is real but thin: one small testosterone trial and one exercise-fatigue trial, with everything else resting on animal and cell studies. Ignore anyone calling it a "natural steroid." The part that genuinely matters, and that almost no one covers, is what's in the resin besides the marketed actives: shilajit is scraped from mountain rock, so heavy metals — including thallium, which one 2025 study found higher in some supplements than in raw resin — are the real risk. Buy a third-party tested product with a certificate of analysis, and keep your expectations modest.

What shilajit's benefits are — and which hold up?

Here's the honest picture the hype pages skip: outside of two small human trials, the evidence is preclinical or traditional.

  • Testosterone in men — the best (still thin) evidence. The load-bearing study is a single 90-day trial of 75 men aged 45–55 (with a ~22% dropout): 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily modestly raised total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEA-S versus placebo, with LH/FSH unchanged (Pandit 2016, PMID 26395129). One site, no independent replication, and it measured hormone levels — not muscle, libido, or any clinical outcome.
  • Exercise fatigue — one narrow trial. In a 3-arm trial of 63 men, only the 500 mg/day dose — and only within a post-hoc subgroup with above-average baseline muscle damage — showed less strength loss than placebo; the 250 mg/day arm did not differ from placebo (Keller 2019, PMID 30728074). A single-lab, subgroup-only result.
  • Energy / anti-fatigue mechanism — mostly rats. The mitochondrial "cellular energy" story comes from a rodent chronic-fatigue model, not humans (Surapaneni 2012, PMID 22771318).
  • Brain / memory — entirely preclinical. A review discusses in-vitro evidence that fulvic acid may block the tau tangles seen in Alzheimer's — genuinely interesting, but there is no human cognitive trial, and the authors themselves call it theoretical (Carrasco-Gallardo 2012, PMID 22482077).
  • Altitude sickness — tradition, not trials. The famous high-altitude use is a traditional-use narrative with no controlled human altitude study (Meena 2010, PMID 20532096).

So the honest tally: the marketed benefits (brain, altitude, anti-aging) rest on animal, cell-culture, or traditional-use literature — not human trials. A skeptical academic review put it plainly: shilajit's bioactivity "lacks substantial evidence" from well-designed human studies (Wilson 2011, PMID 21530631). The part that actually matters: is it safe and real?

With most supplements the buying question is "which one works best." With shilajit it's "which one is actually clean." Because it's scraped from mountain rock, shilajit naturally carries metals — a 2024 review found roughly 65 different metals across samples, some over WHO/FDA limits (Hussain & Saeed 2024, PMID 38393486). And a 2025 study found thallium — more toxic than mercury — at up to 0.5 µg/g in commercial supplements, in some cases higher than the raw resin, meaning processing doesn't automatically remove it (Kamgar 2025, PMID 39827344).

Two traps follow from that. First, "raw and natural" is not safer — unpurified resin can carry mycotoxins and grit, which is why tradition purifies it. Second, the fulvic-acid percentage on the label is nearly meaningless on its own: a 15% resin and a 50% standardized extract can both be honest because they're measured by different methods. The one number that matters is on the certificate of analysis.

Tier 1: testosterone in men — real, but resting on one trial

This is the claim shilajit is sold on, and it's also the best-evidenced one — which says more about the rest of the evidence than about this trial. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 75 healthy men aged 45–55 took 250mg of purified shilajit twice daily (500mg/day total) for 90 days. Total testosterone, free testosterone, and DHEA-S rose significantly versus placebo; LH and FSH, the pituitary hormones that regulate testosterone production, were unchanged (Pandit 2016, PMID: 26395129). That's a real hormone-panel result. It is also one trial, from one small research group in Kolkata, India, never independently replicated, and it measured blood levels — not muscle, libido, mood, or any outcome a man would actually notice.

That same research circle ran an earlier trial worth knowing about: a 2010 study of "processed Shilajit" in 35 men with oligospermia (low sperm count), of whom 28 completed 90 days of treatment. Sperm count rose 61.4%, motility improved, and serum testosterone rose 23.5% versus baseline (Biswas 2010, PMID: 20078516). Two of the authors on the 2016 testosterone trial — Biswas TK and Pandit S — are also authors here, and it had no placebo-controlled comparison arm, relying on before-and-after change instead. It's suggestive, not confirmatory, and it's the same small group's data again, not a second, independent trial.

Tier 2: exercise recovery and bone density — positive, but read past the headline

Three trials get cited for shilajit and physical performance, and each one is weaker than the citation alone suggests:

  • Strength retention after fatigue — subgroup only. In a 3-arm, 8-week trial of 63 men (500mg/day, 250mg/day, or placebo), the 500mg/day group retained significantly more strength after a fatiguing protocol than placebo — but only within a post-hoc subgroup with above-average baseline muscle damage, and using the branded extract PrimaVie. The 250mg/day dose, closer to what most retail products actually deliver, did not differ from placebo (Keller 2019, PMID: 30728074).
  • Collagen synthesis — a blood biomarker, not a measured outcome. A later trial from the same University of Nebraska lab gave 35 men 500mg or 1,000mg of shilajit daily for 8 weeks and found a significant within-group rise in serum pro-C1α1, a biomarker of type-1 collagen synthesis, with no change in the placebo group; the only between-group test reported reached significance for the higher dose alone (Neltner 2024, PMID: 36546868). A rising biomarker is a real finding, but it's not the same as a measured change in tendon strength, joint pain, or skin appearance — none of which this trial tested.
  • Bone density in postmenopausal women — the best-designed trial, and it stands alone. The most rigorous shilajit trial we found measured an actual clinical endpoint: 60 postmenopausal women with osteopenia took placebo, 250mg, or 500mg of a standardized shilajit extract daily for 48 weeks. Bone mineral density at the spine and hip progressively declined on placebo but was dose-dependently preserved with shilajit, alongside improved markers of bone turnover, oxidative stress, and inflammation (Pingali 2022, PMID: 35933897). This is a genuinely encouraging result on a real outcome — and it is a single trial from a single institute, not yet replicated anywhere else.

What a lot of the rest rests on: gene-expression studies with the manufacturer in the room

A cluster of shilajit studies gets cited as evidence for "cellular energy" or anti-aging effects, and it's worth knowing what they actually measured. Two trials from an Ohio State-affiliated group took muscle or skin biopsies and ran them through transcriptome analysis — looking at which genes turned on, not at any functional result. An 8-to-12-week trial in overweight/obese adults found upregulation of extracellular-matrix genes (including collagen, elastin, and fibronectin) in muscle tissue after shilajit supplementation (Das 2016, PMID: 27414521); a 14-week trial in middle-aged women found similar gene induction in skin along with improved skin microperfusion at the higher of two doses tested (Das 2019, PMID: 31161927). Both trials list a co-author from Natreon India — the company that makes PrimaVie, the standardized extract used across much of this research. That affiliation is disclosed in the papers, not hidden, and gene activation is a legitimate thing to measure. But "genes related to collagen turned on" is not the same claim as "your skin or muscles measurably improved," and neither trial tested that.

Worth naming directly: one author, Veeraragavan M of Natreon, appears on both the 2016 muscle-transcriptome trial above and on the rodent chronic-fatigue study researchers cite for shilajit's "energy" mechanism (Surapaneni 2012, PMID: 22771318) — itself a rat model, with no human trial behind the energy claim at all. Shilajit's human research base is a small circle of overlapping labs and one recurring manufacturer, which is exactly why single studies from it shouldn't be read as settled science.

What's essentially unproven in humans: brain, altitude, immunity, anti-aging

Outside the trials above, the benefits most associated with shilajit online — cognitive/memory support, altitude sickness, immune function, general anti-aging — have no controlled human trial behind them. That evidence sits in animal models, cell-culture work, or traditional Ayurvedic use, which is a reasonable basis for further research but not for a consumer-facing claim. The buying signal that matters more than any benefit claim: contamination

Every benefit graded above assumes you're taking a clean product — and with shilajit, that's not a safe assumption. It's scraped from mountain rock, so it naturally carries metals: a 2024 review found roughly 65 different metals across tested samples, some over WHO/FDA limits, and a 2025 study specifically measuring thallium (more toxic than mercury) found it at higher levels in some finished commercial supplements than in the raw resin they came from — meaning processing doesn't reliably remove it. Why is so much shilajit research tied to the same few labs and one brand?

Because the human evidence base is genuinely small. A handful of research groups - a Kolkata Ayurvedic-hospital team, a University of Nebraska sports-nutrition lab, and an Ohio State group that has run more than one study with a co-author from Natreon, the manufacturer of the branded extract PrimaVie - account for most of what exists. That's disclosed, not hidden, and it doesn't make the individual results false. But it does mean almost none of shilajit's flattering data has been independently replicated by an unconnected lab, which is exactly why the grading on this page is more cautious than shilajit's marketing.
