Example: says “tested,” but not on a public list
Nature’s Bounty is one example. Its label says the product was tested but names no outside lab, so you cannot look it up. Other labels we read also say “lab tested”; none of those is on a public list either.
-

Not on a public list
3 mg melatonin a tablet, dissolves under the tongue
Its label says “Guaranteed Quality Laboratory Tested.” It names no outside lab, so this is the brand’s own word.

Why testing matters for melatonin
Lab studies have found melatonin amounts far from the label. In 31 supplements tested in Canada, melatonin ran from 83% below to 478% above the label. The same product varied by up to 465% from batch to batch (Erland 2017). In 25 gummies sold in the US, 22 were off by more than 10%, from 74% to 347% of the label (Cohen 2023; one sample per brand).
A testing list means an outside group checks the product and lists it by name, so you can look it up. We found no study that compared the accuracy of listed and unlisted melatonin.
What each list checks
There are two kinds. Some lists check the label amount: that the bottle holds what the label says, without harmful contaminants. Others also test for drugs banned in sport, which matters only if you are drug-tested. “Lab tested” printed on a label, with no program named, is the brand’s word.
| List | What it checks | How it checks |
|---|---|---|
| USP Verifiedchecks the label amount | That the product holds the ingredients on the label in the stated amounts, has no harmful levels of listed contaminants, breaks down in a set time, and is made under FDA good manufacturing practice. | Audits, lab tests before listing, and tests of listed products bought off the shelf. |
| NSF/ANSI 173checks the label amount | That the product holds the ingredients on the label and nothing else, and has no harmful levels of contaminants. | Annual audits, and NSF retests each product from time to time. Not a banned-substance program. |
| NSF Certified for Sportalso tests for drugs banned in sport | The label matches the contents, plus screening for substances banned in sport. | Factory audits; listings can be searched by lot. |
How to check your bottle
- Find the mark. Look for a USP or NSF mark on the bottle. “Lab tested” with no program named is a claim.
- Open the program’s own list. USP Verified, NSF/ANSI 173, NSF Certified for Sport. Or search them on our testing-list index.
- Match the strength and form. Nature Made’s listing is for its 3 mg tablet. Other strengths and gummies are listed, or not, on their own.
Questions
Which melatonin is third-party tested?
Nature Made Melatonin 3 mg is USP Verified. 12 of the 29 melatonin products we read are on a public testing list: 6 are USP Verified and 6 are on NSF/ANSI 173; 2 of those 6 are also NSF Certified for Sport. Two of these are sold through our links: Nature Made 3 mg tablets and Nature Made 2.5 mg gummies.
Is Nature Made melatonin USP Verified?
Yes, the 3 mg tablet. USP’s list includes “Nature Made Melatonin 3 Mg Tablets” (list checked September 22, 2026).
Is Nature’s Bounty melatonin third-party tested?
Its 3 mg quick-dissolve label says “Guaranteed Quality Laboratory Tested,” but it names no outside lab, and it is not on the USP or NSF lists we searched.
Are melatonin gummies third-party tested?
Some are. Nature Made Melatonin 2.5 mg Gummies are USP Verified; they are our gummy pick on our melatonin gummies page. USP Verified lists some other melatonin gummies too.
Does a testing list mean the dose is accurate?
Not for certain. USP says it checks that a product holds the ingredients on the label, through audits, lab tests before listing and tests of samples bought off the shelf. Lab studies have found melatonin amounts far off the label (Erland 2017; Cohen 2023). No study we read compared the accuracy of listed and unlisted melatonin.
