Brittle nails are biotin's second-best-known claim, and the evidence here is a genuine notch better than for hair — a handful of small, older studies reported thicker, less split nails after several months of high-dose biotin. It's still thin: those studies were largely uncontrolled by modern standards, so a real placebo effect or natural variation can't be ruled out. "Energy," metabolism, and other claims on the label
Biotin bottles and gummies are frequently marketed for "energy" or "metabolism support" beyond hair and nails, riding on its real role in fat and glucose metabolism. That mechanism is real, but the marketing leap isn't supported: there's no good evidence that biotin supplementation increases energy, boosts metabolic rate, or aids weight loss in people who aren't deficient. Most supplement side-effects pages are about what a compound does to your body: GI upset, liver strain, drug interactions that raise or lower blood levels of a medication. Biotin barely has any of that. It's water-soluble, the adult requirement is only about 30mcg/day, and there's no established tolerable upper intake level because researchers haven't found a dose that reliably causes harm — excess biotin is simply excreted (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, Biotin Fact Sheet). People take 5,000-10,000mcg hair-and-nail products daily without classic toxicity symptoms. That's not a reason to assume high-dose biotin is risk-free, though. The real risk: biotin corrupts blood tests, and the direction matters
A falsely LOW troponin is the single most dangerous documented effect of high-dose biotin. Many immunoassays — including troponin, the standard blood test for a heart attack — use a "sandwich" format built on a biotin-streptavidin chemical link. Excess circulating biotin saturates that link and pulls the result down, the exact direction that could make a real heart attack look like a normal troponin (Rosner 2019, PMID: 31641565). The FDA has stated it received a report of a patient who died after a troponin result came back falsely low, on an assay known to be biotin-sensitive, while that patient was taking high-dose biotin — though the agency notes biotin's role wasn't confirmed, since the troponin measurement in that case was taken after death. A controlled study found a single ordinary 10,000mcg (10mg) dose distorted 9 of 23 (39%) of the hormone and non-hormone assays tested, sampled at baseline, after a week on the dose, and again a week after stopping (Li 2017, JAMA, PMID: 28973622).
Thyroid and hormone testing gets hit from the other direction, which is what makes this genuinely confusing rather than a simple "biotin makes numbers wrong." TSH is also measured with the sandwich format, so biotin falsely lowers it, the same way it lowers troponin. But free T4 and T3 use a different, "competitive" assay format, where excess biotin falsely raises the result (Rosner 2019). A falsely low TSH plus falsely high free T4/T3 is exactly the lab signature of an overactive thyroid — and it has led to real patients being worked up, and in at least one published case treated, for Graves' disease when their thyroid was actually normal (Elston 2016, PMID: 27362288). Practical guidance: what to do before a blood draw

- Give more time for high-dose products or high-stakes tests. Acne. Plenty of people online report breakouts after starting high-dose biotin, and there's a plausible mechanism: biotin and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) share the same intestinal transporter, so a large biotin dose could in theory crowd out B5 absorption (Said 1998, PMID: 9814986), and B5 has some separate evidence as an acne treatment.
