Best Sea Moss (2026): Compared by What Each Brand Discloses, Not Hype

The best sea moss for most people is Double Wood Irish Sea Moss: two capsules give 1,200 mg of Irish moss extract for $0.22 a day at the brand’s price, and the brand posts a lab report for its batch. People eat sea moss for its minerals; human studies are few. With a thyroid condition or pregnancy, ask your doctor first.

Why we pick it The only active ingredient is an Irish moss (Chondrus crispus) extract, with no bladderwrack, in an exact dose. Its brand posts a lab report for batch 2601602: lead 0.355 mcg a serving (the brand’s limit is 0.5 mcg) and total arsenic 0.167 mcg.

What you give up No iodine number. The label says 2 to 4 capsules a day, and the brand warns to take care above 4 because of iodine. The report names no lab and covers one batch. It is not on a public testing list; none of the 4 is.

Which sea moss is right for you?

Pick by form. Seaweed takes up iodine and metals from the sea, so we favor brands that post test results.

Want gel that is ready to eat?

A 16 oz jar lasts about 16 days at 2 tablespoons. The brand estimates 3 to 5 mcg of iodine a serving but posts no lab report. In January 2026 it recalled all gel jars made before January 9, 2026, over missing safety records (a possible botulism risk; no illnesses were reported) (FDA 2026). The lid shows the month made, so look for 02/2026 or later.

Want to make your own gel?

Soak it, blend it with water and keep it in the fridge. One $14.99 bag of Elderwise makes about 24 oz of gel, or $0.62 a day at 2 tablespoons. It is Gracilaria, a different red seaweed from Irish moss, which much “sea moss” is. The brand says it is lab tested and free of heavy metals but does not post a report.

Want to know how much iodine you get?

Maine Coast lists iodine per serving on its own site: 888 mcg in a 3 g teaspoon of flakes, from its own tests and published data. That is 81% of the 1,100 mcg a day adults should stay under (the upper limit). So use a quarter teaspoon, about 222 mcg. The brand also posts a yearly test table for its Irish moss: lead 0.2 and cadmium 0.8 parts per million, no mercury found.

Maine Coast Irish Moss Flakes
$0.07 a day at a quarter teaspoon, about 222 mcg iodine

Want a gummy?

Most list 100 mg or less of sea moss extract per serving, plus sugar. See sea moss gummies compared.

Sea moss we compared, ranked

We rank by the testing each brand shows you: a lab report for one batch first, then a yearly test table, then the brand’s word alone. Then by cost a day at the brand’s own price. We left out sea moss blends with bladderwrack and burdock: they add a brown seaweed, often richer in iodine. Gel and dried sea moss are priced at 2 tablespoons of gel, flakes at a quarter teaspoon.

What to check before you buy sea moss

  • A lab report for your batch, with lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury results, not just the words “lab tested.” Match the batch (lot) number on your bottle or bag to the report.
  • The harmful kind of arsenic (inorganic) as its own number. Most arsenic in seaweed is a less harmful kind, so a total arsenic number does not tell you much (EFSA 2023). No report for these four gives it yet.
  • An iodine number per serving. Of the four, only Maine Coast lists one; TrueSeaMoss gives a rough estimate.
  • The seaweed’s name. Irish moss is Chondrus crispus; much “sea moss” is Gracilaria or Eucheuma, other red seaweeds.
  • No bladderwrack, unless you want it. It is a brown seaweed, the kind with the most iodine, and many “sea moss” blends add it.

How much iodine is in sea moss?

It depends on the batch, and the numbers are far apart. In 30 Irish moss and dulse samples from shops, Irish moss held about 3.9 mcg of iodine per gram, dry (Darias-Rosales 2020). Maine Coast’s own figures for its Irish moss are about 296 mcg per gram, roughly 75 times more. They are different tests, but the gap shows why a label number matters.

Adults should stay under 1,100 mcg of iodine a day from all sources (NIH). Too much can upset the thyroid (Smyth 2021). Doctors have reported thyroid problems after people took kelp, a brown seaweed, as a tea or pills (Müssig 2006, Gherbon 2019); those cases were kelp, not Irish moss. More on sea moss safety.

Ask your doctor first if you have a thyroid condition, take thyroid medicine or any regular medicine, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, and before giving it to a child.

Does sea moss work?

There is almost no research in people. Claims about “92 minerals,” immunity and skin come from sellers, not trials. In one rat study, Irish moss in the diet raised helpful gut bacteria (Liu 2015); that is not proof in people. So we rank on what you can check, not on health results. More in our sea moss guide.

Questions people ask

What is the best sea moss to buy?

Double Wood Irish Sea Moss, for most people. Its brand posts a lab report for heavy metals in its batch. If you want an iodine number, Maine Coast lists one for its Irish moss flakes.

Are sea moss gummies good?

Most hold little sea moss. On most labels we read, a two-gummy serving has 100 mg or less of sea moss extract, plus sugar and often bladderwrack and burdock. A capsule holds far more for less. See sea moss gummies compared.

Is wildcrafted sea moss better than pool-grown?

Not by itself. “Wildcrafted” means picked from the sea, not tested. Wild and farmed seaweed both take up iodine and metals from their water. Look for a lab report, an iodine number and the species.

How we rank

Sea moss has no studied dose, so we give it no 0-10 score. We checked each product against NSF/ANSI 173, NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice and USP Verified; none is listed. More on our method.
