Why we pick it It is on two lists that check different things. Informed Choice buys samples from stores at least monthly and tests them for drugs banned in sport. Informed Protein tests protein content against the label. It also costs the least of the clear wheys on a testing list.
What you give up It uses sucralose and acesulfame K. If you avoid those, buy Ascent, below. The name says “isolate,” but the label lists hydrolyzed whey (partly broken down) and does not say whether it is made from isolate.
The best clear whey for your needs
Myprotein suits most people. If one of these matters more to you, buy the clear whey made for it.
For drug-tested athletes: Ascent Clear Protein Isolate
Informed Sport tests every batch for drugs banned in sport before it is sold, and it lists Ascent’s tested batches by flavor, so you can check yours. It uses stevia and 1 g of cane sugar, with no sucralose. It costs about 69% more than Myprotein per 25 g.
Ascent Clear Protein Isolate
$2.50 per 25 g · 20 g a scoop · Informed Sport
Electrolytes in the same scoop: Wild Society Clear Whey + Electrolytes
It adds sodium, potassium and magnesium (320 mg of sodium a scoop), so it doubles as a sports drink. It is on both Informed Choice and Informed Sport. It costs about 111% more than Myprotein per 25 g.
Wild Society Clear Whey + Electrolytes
$3.12 per 25 g · 20 g a scoop · Informed Choice, Informed Sport
Clear whey vs regular whey
It is the same milk protein, made to drink like juice. Clear whey mixes thin and see-through in water; regular whey mixes creamy, like a shake. For muscle, the protein you eat in a day matters more than the type. How much you need: protein per day.
Most clear wheys cost more per gram of protein than a regular whey tub. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard, a regular whey, is $1.49 per 25 g on Amazon. Myprotein is the exception.
How to choose a clear whey
Buy one on a testing list
5 of the 15 clear wheys we checked are on a testing list. We found none sold on Amazon on NSF Certified for Sport, NSF/ANSI 173 or USP Verified. Informed Sport tests every batch before it is sold; Informed Choice buys samples from stores; Informed Protein tests protein content against the label. See which protein powders are third-party tested.
Read the sweeteners
Myprotein, MusclePharm and Rule 1 use sucralose. Ascent and Wild Society use stevia instead.

Questions people ask
What is the best clear whey protein?
Myprotein Clear Whey Isolate. It is on Informed Choice and Informed Protein and costs $1.48 per 25 g of protein on Amazon. A scoop has 20 g of protein and 80 calories.
Is clear whey better than regular whey?
Not for muscle. It is the same milk protein, made to mix thin and clear like juice instead of creamy like a shake. Most clear wheys cost more per gram of protein than a regular whey tub: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard is $1.49 per 25 g. Pick clear whey if you like the taste and texture more. See the best protein powder.
Is clear whey protein lactose free?
Most do not say. One of the 15 labels we read prints 0 g of lactose; the others make no lactose-free claim. Most list whey protein isolate first, which is typically 0.5 to 1% lactose, according to U.S. Dairy Export Council spec sheets. Whey is a milk protein, so none is safe with a milk allergy.
Is clear whey good for weight loss?
No protein powder causes weight loss. If you are counting calories, compare calories for the protein you get. Myprotein has 80 calories for 20 g of protein. Ascent has 100 calories for 20 g, including 1 g of added cane sugar.
Do any clear wheys add amino acids to the protein?
We could read 13 of the 15 ingredient lists in full. Of those, only MusclePharm Clear-ISO adds an amino acid: 5 g of L-glutamine, per the tub. The label does not say whether that counts in its protein. Some tubs tout BCAAs; whey has them naturally.
How we picked
We read the Nutrition Facts of all 15 clear wheys sold on Amazon, and the full ingredient list of 13 (two were missing or too small to read), and searched 6 testing lists for each one. We ranked on a testing list first, then the cost of 25 g of protein, then the sweeteners. We left out collagen blends. Want a regular whey?
