Best Probiotics for Bloating (2026): Evidence-Based Strain Guide

The best probiotic for bloating is Align: it holds B. infantis 35624, which eased bloating, belly pain and gas in a 4-week trial of 362 women with IBS, at $1.08 a day. In that trial, 100 million CFU a day worked better than 10 billion, so a bigger CFU count is not always better.

Why we pick it In a trial of 362 women with IBS, this strain at 100 million CFU a day eased bloating, belly pain and gas over 4 weeks better than a placebo. The trial used its own capsules; Align is the store product with that strain.

What you give up Its count falls over time: 1 billion when made, but only 10 million promised by the best-by date, below the dose that worked. Buy a fresh box and use it well before the date.

Which probiotic is right for you?

Two strains have bloating trials. Choose by budget and how much proof you want.

Want to spend less?

Schiff Digestive Advantage has B. coagulans GBI-30, a spore-forming strain that keeps well. In one trial of 44 people with IBS, belly pain and bloating eased over 8 weeks. The trial was small, and its two groups started out different, so treat it as a weaker result than Align’s. It costs $0.36 a day.

Bloated after milk or certain foods?

That may be a food intolerance, not a gut-bacteria problem, and a probiotic will not fix it. Try cutting the food for a week and see if the bloating goes away.

What the trials found

The largest bloating trial gave 362 women with IBS B. infantis 35624 at three doses, or a placebo, for 4 weeks. At 100 million CFU a day it beat the placebo for belly pain, bloating and gas. At 1 million it did nothing, and at 10 billion it did no better than the placebo; that capsule also had problems in how it was made (Whorwell 2006).

Across 53 IBS trials, some strains seemed to help symptoms and pain, but the review could not say for sure which ones work (Ford 2018). The original VSL#3 formula, sold today as Visbiome, did not ease bloating across 5 IBS trials (Connell 2018). So a probiotic for bloating is worth a one-month try, not a cure. If you are seriously ill or your immune system is weak, ask your doctor first.

How we rank

Two things, in order: does the label name a strain that was tested for bloating, and what a day costs at the brand’s own price. No product here is on a testing list we check. We don’t score probiotics out of 10; dose depends on the strain. More on our method.

Questions people ask

Why does a 1 billion CFU probiotic have more evidence than 50 billion?

Because the evidence is for the strain and dose that were tested, not the count. A label with 50 billion of strains never tested for bloating has no trial behind it.

How long were probiotics studied for bloating?

Four weeks in the B. infantis trial and 8 weeks in the B. coagulans trial. Give it about a month, and stop if it does not help.

What causes bloating?

Many things: IBS, foods you do not digest well such as lactose, constipation, and swallowed air. A probiotic will not fix a food intolerance. See a doctor if bloating is severe or new after age 50, or comes with weight loss, fever, vomiting, or blood or black color in your stool.
