Why we pick it It gives you more of what you pay Nordic for, in the same form: rTG, the triglyceride form found in fish. Two softgels hold 1,500 mg of EPA and 570 mg of DHA, against 650 mg and 450 mg in two Nordic soft gels. At 1,000 mg a day, it costs about $170 less a year. And IFOS, a testing program built for fish oil, posts a lab report for each lot it tests.
What you give up The softgels are large. Nordic’s soft gels are lemon-flavored, and Nordic also sells a liquid and gummies. One Viva softgel is about what two Nordic soft gels give, so most people need only one a day.
Which Nordic Naturals alternative is right for you?
The first four cost less than Nordic per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA. The last one is for people who want to stay with Nordic.
Want one softgel a day?
Sports Research Triple Strength puts 950 mg of EPA+DHA in one softgel, a bit less than Nordic gives in two (1,100 mg). It is triglyceride form and on IFOS (listing SPRT0048).

Per 1,000 mg: $0.35 list, $0.34 Amazon
Want an EPA and DHA mix closer to Nordic’s?
Nordic’s two soft gels give 650 mg of EPA and 450 mg of DHA. Viva has far more EPA than DHA. Carlson Elite Omega-3 Gems is closer to Nordic’s mix: 800 mg of EPA and 600 mg of DHA in two softgels, the most DHA of these. It is on IFOS (listing CRLL0014) and costs less than Nordic. Carlson’s label says its omega-3s are in ethyl ester form.

Shopping on Amazon for the lowest cost per gram?
NOW Ultra Omega-3 has 750 mg of EPA+DHA in one softgel. On Amazon it cost $0.21 per 1,000 mg on November 6, 2026, the least of the oils on this page. It is the ethyl ester form, a processed form of fish oil that absorbs best with a meal that has some fat. It is not on a public testing list; NOW says it tests in its own labs.

Want a low bottle price from a drugstore brand?
Nature Made Fish Oil 1200 mg is $17.49 for 100 softgels at Nature Made’s price, the cheapest bottle here, and it is USP Verified. But two softgels give only 600 mg of EPA+DHA, so you need 4 to match two Nordic soft gels. Per 1,000 mg it costs $0.58: still less than Nordic, more than Viva.

600 mg EPA+DHA in 2 softgels
Per 1,000 mg: $0.58 list, $0.42 Amazon
Like Nordic’s lemon taste, or want a liquid?
Stay with Nordic Naturals. It sells Ultimate Omega in lemon-flavored soft gels, plus liquid and gummy versions. It costs about 2.6 times Viva per 1,000 mg.

Take a blood thinner, or have a heart rhythm problem?
Ask your doctor before any fish oil. In heart trials, fish oil raised the risk of atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat, by about a quarter, and more above 1 g a day (Gencer 2021).

Questions people ask
Is Nordic Naturals worth the extra cost?
For most people, no. At list price, Ultimate Omega costs $0.77 per 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA, about 2.6 times Viva Naturals Triple Strength ($0.30). At 1,000 mg a day, that is about $170 more a year. The extra money buys lemon flavor and liquid and gummy choices, not more omega-3, a better form or a public testing list.
Is Nordic Naturals third party tested?
Nordic says so: its site says its products are third-party tested and that a Certificate of Analysis is available for any product. Those are reports Nordic posts itself. We did not find Ultimate Omega on any public testing list we search (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, Informed Choice, NSF/ANSI 173, USP Verified and IFOS; searched September 29, 2026). The IFOS site lists Nordic only for a non-GMO test. Nordic’s Sport versions (Ultimate Omega 2X Sport and Ultimate Omega-D3 Sport) are on NSF Certified for Sport, which screens for drugs banned in sport.
How many Viva softgels equal two Nordic soft gels?
One. One Viva softgel holds 1,035 mg of EPA+DHA; two Nordic soft gels hold 1,100 mg. At list price that is about $0.31 a day for Viva against $0.84 for Nordic. Studies of fish oil used about 500 to 4,000 mg of EPA+DHA a day. Talk to your doctor before taking more than about 3,000 mg a day. See our omega-3 dosage guide.
What makes a fish oil good?
Five things. The EPA and DHA in a serving, not the big “fish oil” number on the front. The form: the triglyceride form found in fish raised blood omega-3 a bit more than ethyl ester over six months, but both worked (Neubronner 2011). Freshness: an IFOS lot report gives the oil a freshness score called TOTOX, and lower means fresher. A public testing list. And the cost of 1,000 mg of EPA+DHA. Here is how to read a lot report.
Will a cheaper fish oil give me more fish burps?
Price does not decide it. Any fish oil can cause a fishy taste, burps or loose stools. Take it with a meal. If burps bother you, our best fish oil page has a pick whose brand says it has none.
Every fish oil we score is in the best fish oil; what each testing list checks is in third-party tested fish oil. Head to head: Nordic Naturals vs Sports Research, Carlson vs Nordic Naturals and Nordic Naturals vs NOW Foods.
