Why we pick it Puori sells O3 as burpless. Of the 3 oils here whose makers say they cause no fishy burps or taste, its newest lot is the freshest: 6.86, under half the IFOS limit. IFOS posts a lab report for each lot it tests. It is also the pick for fish burps on our best fish oil page.

What you give up It costs about 2.7 times as much per 1,000 mg as Viva Naturals, whose newest lot is even fresher (4.73) but which makes no burp claim. The dose is 3 softgels. OmegaVia has an enteric coating and costs less, but its newest lot is less fresh (14.84). "Burpless" is Puori's claim; no study has tested it.

The best fish oil for your needs

Puori suits most people who get fish burps. If one of these matters more to you, buy the one made for it. Both are on IFOS.

Want an enteric-coated softgel: OmegaVia Ultra Concentrated

OmegaVia says its softgel has an enteric coating, so it opens past the stomach instead of in it. ConsumerLab says an enteric-coated fish oil is less likely to cause fishy burps, though in theory it may be absorbed a little less. It is on IFOS, and one softgel gives 1,040 mg of EPA and DHA.

How to stop fish oil burps

Take it with a meal, and split the dose

The Arthritis Foundation and ConsumerLab both say to take fish oil with a meal, in smaller, split doses. If you take more than one softgel, take some at breakfast and the rest at dinner, so your stomach has less to handle at once.

Buy fresh oil

Fish oil goes stale as it oxidizes, and stale oil smells and tastes more fishy. The Arthritis Foundation reports that more than 1 in 10 fish oils tested were rancid or close to it. IFOS tests each lot it lists for oxidation and posts the result. Lemon flavor can hide stale oil, so a test result tells you more than the taste.

Try an enteric-coated softgel or freeze them

An enteric coating keeps the softgel shut until it passes the stomach. A frozen softgel also breaks down more slowly. Both tips come from the Arthritis Foundation; we found no trial that tested either one for burps.

Questions people ask

Are fish burps a sign the oil is bad?

Not always. Fresh fish oil can still cause burps, and in trials of prescription fish oil, belching and a fishy taste were more common than with a dummy pill. But oil that smells like old fish when you break a softgel open may be stale. Throw it out.

Is there a fish oil with no fish taste at all?

Algae oil has the same omega-3s and comes from algae, not fish. See the best fish oil for our algae pick.

How we picked

We looked at fish oils on IFOS that are sold on Amazon and read what each brand says about taste and burps. We checked the newest IFOS lab report for 5 products. We ranked on three things, in this order: a maker's claim of no fishy burps, a fresh newest lot, and the cost of 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA. Not worried about burps?
