Inulin Dosage: How Much a Day, and How to Avoid Bloating
Adults: start with 2 to 3 g of inulin a day and add a little each week. Stay at or under about 10 g a day. More brings gas. Inulin does little for constipation; for that, take psyllium.

How much inulin a day
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where to start | 2 to 3 g a day. Our suggestion: start low, because gas is the main side effect. That is 1/3 scoop (2.3 g) of Nutricost Organic Inulin Powder. |
| Most a day | About 10 g. Healthy adults tolerated up to 10 g of plain inulin as a single test dose (Bonnema 2010). At 12 to 15 g a day, trials found more gas (BDA 2025). With Nutricost Organic Inulin Powder, that means 1 scoop (7 g) a day at most. |
| FOS (shorter-chain) | 5 g a day or less. 10 g caused far more gut symptoms than placebo; 5 g was fine (Bonnema 2010). |
| To feed gut bacteria | 3 to 20 g a day raised Bifidobacterium across 50 trials (Nagy 2023; two authors from BENEO, an inulin maker). The low end fits under 10 g. |
| For constipation | Not advised. Inulin-type fiber did not make people go more often, though it softened stool (BDA 2025). Take psyllium instead. |
| If you have IBS | Fibers that ferment, like inulin, can make gas and bloating worse (ACG 2021). Ask your doctor first. |
| Pregnant, breast-feeding, or a child | Ask a doctor first. These amounts are for adults. |

How much is that in your product?
A “serving” means different things on different tubs. Count grams of fiber on the label, not scoops. For the inulin products on this page:
| Product | One serving | To start (2 to 3 g) | Most a day | Per 10 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nutricost Organic Inulin Powder Check price | 1 scoop (8 g): 7 g fiber | 1/3 scoop (2.3 g) | 1 scoop (7 g) | $0.56 |
| NOW Organic Inulin Prebiotic Powder Check price | 1 level teaspoon (about 4 g): 4 g fiber | 1/2 teaspoon (2 g) | 2 teaspoons (8 g) | $0.75 |
| Micro Ingredients Organic Inulin FOS Powder Check price | 1 scoop (2.6 g): 2.3 g fiber | 1 scoop (2.3 g) | 2 scoops (4.6 g) | $0.38 |
| Benefiber Prebiotic Fiber GummiesNSF/ANSI 173 Check price | 3 gummies: 6 g fiber | 1 gummy (2 g) | 5 gummies (10 g) | $1.42 |
| Physician's Choice Fiber Gummies Check price | 2 gummies: 5 g fiber | 1 gummy (2.5 g) | 4 gummies (10 g) | $1.41 |
Micro Ingredients Organic Inulin FOS Powder is sold as inulin and FOS, so its “most a day” uses the FOS limit, 5 g. Some gummies use other fibers with the inulin; check the label.
Build your plan, week by week
Pick a daily target and the inulin you have. This shows a simple week-by-week build-up, in grams and in servings of your product.
Building up, and gas
- Expect gas first, then bloating. Those were the most common symptoms when healthy adults took inulin (Bonnema 2010).
- Go slow. Start with 2 to 3 g a day and add a few grams a week. If gas bothers you, stay at the same amount for another week, or drop back. This plan is our suggestion, not one a trial tested.
- Stop at about 10 g. Trials at 12 to 15 g a day found more gas than a placebo (BDA 2025).
- Psyllium may help with the gas. Taken with inulin, psyllium cut gas in the colon in people with IBS (Gunn 2022) and, once its gel reached the colon, in healthy adults (Dellschaft 2026). Both tested one dose, not daily use.
Inulin vs FOS
FOS (also called oligofructose) is a shorter-chain form of inulin (Bonnema 2010). The shorter form is harder on the gut: in one study, 10 g of it caused far more symptoms than placebo, while 10 g of plain inulin was fine (Bonnema 2010). A review found FOS added about one bowel movement every 3 days, and long-chain inulin added none (de Vries 2019; two authors from the company Tereos).
Questions
How much inulin should I take a day?
Start with 2 to 3 g a day and add a little each week. Stay at or under about 10 g a day: healthy adults tolerated up to 10 g of plain inulin as a single test dose (Bonnema 2010). With Nutricost Organic Inulin Powder, start with 1/3 scoop (2.3 g).
Is 10 grams of inulin too much?
For plain inulin, a single 10 g dose was well tolerated by healthy adults (Bonnema 2010). Above that, gas rises: constipation trials at 12 to 15 g a day caused more gas than a placebo (BDA 2025). For FOS, the shorter-chain form, 10 g caused far more symptoms; 5 g was fine (Bonnema 2010).
Will inulin help constipation?
Probably not much. US gut doctors found inulin had little to no effect on bowel movements, and only psyllium “appears to be effective” (AGA-ACG 2023). UK dietitians found inulin-type fiber did not make people go more often, though it softened stool (BDA 2025). For constipation, take psyllium.
Can I take inulin with psyllium?
Yes, and it may cut the gas. In people with IBS, psyllium taken with inulin cut gas in the colon to about placebo levels (Gunn 2022). Both that study and a 2026 one in healthy adults (Dellschaft 2026) tested single doses, not daily use.
