Ubiquinol vs Ubiquinone (2026): Which CoQ10 Form Should You Buy?

For most people, ubiquinone, the standard form. Ubiquinol is a form your body also makes from ubiquinone. It may absorb somewhat better, but the studies disagree, and no trial has compared the two forms on a health result. Ubiquinol costs 1.1 to 2.2 times as much per 200 mg as the standard CoQ10 products we score ($0.67 vs $0.30 to $0.62). In our view, ubiquinol is not worth the extra cost for most people.

The three forms

FormWhat it isWhat studies found
UbiquinoneThe standard form of CoQ10. Most CoQ10 products are this form.Your body turns it into ubiquinol, so most CoQ10 in the blood is ubiquinol whichever form you swallow (Pravst 2020; Bhagavan 2007). In a 10-person study, a softgel in soybean oil absorbed better than a hard capsule (Weis 1994). No trial compares ubiquinone and ubiquinol on a health result.
UbiquinolA form your body also makes from ubiquinone. The ubiquinol products we scored use Kaneka’s ubiquinol (Kaneka is an ingredient maker). In 12 adults taking 200 mg a day for 4 weeks of each form, blood CoQ10 rose about twice as much on ubiquinol (Langsjoen 2014; not randomized, and the authors run a CoQ10 testing lab). In 21 older adults given one 100 mg dose, ubiquinol’s 1.7-fold edge was not significant (Pravst 2020).
Solubilized CoQ10CoQ10 made to mix with water as well as fat (for example Qunol Ultra, whose label does not name the form).A review reported that solubilized forms raised blood CoQ10 more (Bhagavan 2007; its authors work for Tishcon, a CoQ10 maker). In one study, a water-soluble syrup was 2.4 times more available than ubiquinone capsules (Pravst 2020). The oil and other ingredients changed how well CoQ10 absorbed, and the best ubiquinone and ubiquinol softgels both did well (López-Lluch 2019).

Which absorbs better

Figure 1. Rise in blood CoQ10 after 4 weeks of 200 mg a day
  • Ubiquinol+3.4 µg/mL
  • Ubiquinone+1.6 µg/mL

12 healthy adults took each form in turn. Blood CoQ10 started at 0.9 µg/mL both times. This is one small study; the other study did not find a significant difference. Source: Langsjoen 2014, PubMed 27128225.

Ubiquinol came out ahead in the one small head-to-head study above, but not significantly in the second study (both are in the table). In a seven-product test, the oil and other ingredients changed how well CoQ10 absorbed, and the best ubiquinone and ubiquinol softgels both did well (López-Lluch 2019). So we call ubiquinol’s edge uncertain.

Most important: no trial has compared the two forms on a health result. Ubiquinone is the standard form and costs less.

Questions

Is ubiquinol better absorbed than ubiquinone?

Maybe a little. One small study found about twice the rise in blood CoQ10 on ubiquinol, and another found no significant difference (both are in the table above). No trial has shown better health results.

Do older adults need ubiquinol?

The claim is that older bodies convert ubiquinone poorly. The one study we read in adults aged 65 to 74 did not show a clear benefit from ubiquinol (see the table above).

Is ubiquinol better than ubiquinone?

Not shown. No trial has compared the two forms on a health result. Ubiquinone is the standard form and costs less. In our view, ubiquinol is not worth the extra cost for most people.

Is Qunol better than Doctor’s Best?

Doctor’s Best says ubiquinone on its label; Qunol’s label doesn’t name the form. Qunol Ultra is solubilized (made to mix with water), which may help absorption; Doctor’s Best adds BioPerine (black pepper extract). Per 200 mg, Doctor’s Best costs less. Neither is on a public testing list (Doctor’s Best’s label says USP Verified, but our copy of USP’s list does not include it). See every CoQ10 we score.
