Why we pick it Its label states the most polyphenols of the 6 we link, at a mid-range price. No trial tested these exact products: the cleanest trials gave a standardized extract with 150 mg of flavonoids a day.

What you give up Zazzee shows a “3rd party certified” badge but names no lab, and it is not on a public testing list. Want one that is? See Double Wood below.

Want one on a testing list?

NSF/ANSI 173, which checks that a product matches its label, lists Double Wood’s Citrus Bergamot Extract 1000 mg. It is the only one we link on a public testing list. Two capsules give 1,000 mg for $0.83 a day at Double Wood’s price. Its label calls it a proprietary extract complex and states no polyphenol amount; the 30% is on its store page.

How to read a citrus bergamot label

Look for the milligrams of extract per serving and a stated polyphenol percent. Some labels print a fresh-fruit equivalent instead, which can look ten or twenty times bigger than the extract inside. Products are not interchangeable: trials tested specific extracts.

Does citrus bergamot work?

Two recent double-blind trials gave a standardized extract with 150 mg of flavonoids a day for four months: LDL cholesterol fell 11.5% in 64 people with high cholesterol (Spina 2024) and 7% in 108 East Asian adults (Yu 2026). Each lists an author who works for Bionap, a bergamot extract maker. A 2026 review of 9 trials found larger drops but rated the evidence low to very low (Chambari 2026). Questions people ask

Can citrus bergamot replace a statin?

No. A 2026 review rated the evidence low to very low (Chambari 2026). One small open-label trial (77 people, 30 days) added bergamot to rosuvastatin and saw a larger drop than the statin alone (Gliozzi 2013). Do not stop or change a statin without your doctor.

Why do some bottles say 2,000 mg?

Some labels print a fresh-fruit equivalent. tnvitamins says 2,000 mg, but each capsule holds 100 mg of extract, far below the amounts trials used. Check the extract milligrams on the Supplement Facts panel.

Is citrus bergamot safe?

Two recent four-month trials, in 64 and 108 people, found no changes in liver, kidney, weight or blood pressure tests (Spina 2024; Yu 2026). There is no long-term data. If you take cholesterol or diabetes medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor first.

How we score

Five marks: does a serving hold an amount of extract trials used, with its polyphenols stated; is the product on a public testing list; what 1,000 mg of extract costs at the brand’s own price against the cheapest; does the label state the amount; and the brand’s FDA recall record. Dose and testing are worth up to 3 points each, cost up to 2, label and recalls up to 1 each. Cost points use the price of 1,000 mg of extract; the table shows the price of one day’s serving.
