Best Magnesium Supplement in Canada (2026): Complete Buying Guide
The best magnesium supplement for most people in Canada is a pure bisglycinate: Jamieson for 100 mg a day, or Nutritionn for 200 mg in one capsule. Both Health Canada licences (NPN 80131651 and 80137688) list bisglycinate as the only source. Several popular Canadian “bisglycinate” capsules also contain magnesium oxide; check the licence before you buy.

Our take
Why we pick it Its Health Canada licence lists one source of magnesium, bisglycinate, at 100 mg a capsule. Several popular “bisglycinate” capsules in Canada also contain magnesium oxide (more below); this one does not. Its licence says adults take 1 capsule a day: 100 mg, well under Health Canada’s 350 mg upper limit for supplements, which leaves room for the magnesium in your food. Amazon.ca sells and ships it, and Jamieson is a Canadian brand you can find in most pharmacies.
What to know 100 mg is a modest dose. If you want 200 mg, Nutritionn’s pure bisglycinate (below) gives that in one capsule. Webber Naturals citrate costs less per mg at list price (CA$0.30 per 300 mg against CA$0.53). We found no Canada-sold magnesium on a public testing list such as USP Verified, so this pick rests on the licence, the dose and the seller.
Licence and testing
Licence: magnesium 100 mg per capsule, from magnesium bisglycinate only; adults 1 capsule a day (NPN 80131651, Health Canada LNHPD, read October 15, 2026). We found no listing on USP Verified or NSF for any magnesium sold on Amazon.ca.

Our take
The same pure bisglycinate as our pick at 200 mg a capsule, so one capsule is a full 200 mg dose. Its licence tells men to take 2 capsules (400 mg). Health Canada allows that, but it is over the 350 mg upper limit, where diarrhea becomes more likely; one capsule stays under it. Its own website lists a price in US dollars, so we show no CAD price.

Our take
At list price, citrate costs less per mg than glycinate, and this is the lowest cost per mg of the Canadian products we priced: CA$0.30 for 300 mg. In small studies citrate was absorbed better than oxide. At higher doses it can loosen stools; if it does, switch to a glycinate. No trial shows glycinate works better than citrate for general use.
Licence and testing
Licence: magnesium 150 mg per capsule, from magnesium citrate; 1 to 3 capsules a day (NPN 80005581).

What’s Different When You Buy Magnesium in Canada
- The intake numbers match the US. Health Canada’s tables give adults 400 to 420 mg a day (men) and 310 to 320 mg (women) from food and supplements, and an upper limit of 350 mg from supplements for anyone 9 and older.
The UL for magnesium represents intake from a pharmacological agent only and does not include intake from food and water.
- Every product needs a licence. Natural health products sold in Canada carry an 8-digit NPN. Health Canada says it
assures consumers that the product has been reviewed and approved by Health Canada for safety and efficacy.
The licence also lists each ingredient and its source, which is how we found the oxide below. Look any NPN up in the Licensed Natural Health Products Database. - Labels can go above 350 mg. Health Canada’s multi-vitamin/mineral monograph allows up to 500 mg a day for adults. Above 350 mg, the label must name a specific use and warn:
When using this product you may experience diarrhea
. - Two 2025 recalls. Health Canada recalled Life Brand (November 12, 2025) and MapleLife (November 26, 2025) magnesium bisglycinate 200 mg because they held magnesium oxide the label did not declare.
- The US favourites are not here. Nature Made, Doctor’s Best and Thorne’s glycinate had no Amazon.ca listing when we checked, so the US picks do not apply.
“Bisglycinate” That Is Partly Oxide
We read the Health Canada licence of every magnesium bisglycinate here. Two of the best-known 200 mg capsules list magnesium oxide as a second source of magnesium: Webber Naturals Magnesium Bisglycinate 200 mg (NPN 80075245) and CanPrev Magnesium Bis-Glycinate 200 Gentle (NPN 80115340). This is declared, so it is legal, and it is common: oxide lets a maker fit 200 mg in one capsule. But oxide was about 4% absorbed in one study, and the glycinate is what you are paying for.
These licences list bisglycinate as the only source: Jamieson 100% Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate 100 mg (NPN 80131651), Nutritionn Magnesium Glycinate 200 mg (NPN 80137688), Natural Factors Magnesium Bisglycinate 200 mg Powder (NPN 80091128) and Pure Encapsulations Magnesium (Glycinate) 120 mg (NPN 80015993).

How We Chose
Our US guide picks the top-scoring glycinate on a public testing list. No magnesium sold on Amazon.ca met that test, so we used checks a Canadian can repeat:
- Sold in Canada. In stock on Amazon.ca with a Canadian postal code on October 15, 2026.
- Licensed, with one stated source. A Health Canada NPN whose ingredient list names one form of magnesium.
- A dose under the upper limit. A serving at or under 350 mg, or easy to split.
- A trustworthy seller. Sold by Amazon.ca or the brand where we had the choice.
- Cost per 300 mg at the brand’s own CAD price.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best magnesium supplement in Canada?
For most people, Jamieson 100% Pure Magnesium Bisglycinate: 100 mg a capsule from bisglycinate only (NPN 80131651), sold by Amazon.ca, 1 capsule a day as its licence directs, CA$0.18 a day at Jamieson’s list price. For 200 mg in one capsule, Nutritionn Magnesium Glycinate (NPN 80137688).
What does the NPN on a magnesium bottle mean?
It is the 8-digit Natural Product Number Health Canada gives a licensed natural health product. Health Canada says it “assures consumers that the product has been reviewed and approved by Health Canada for safety and efficacy.” It is not a lab test of each batch. You can look up any NPN, with its ingredients and dose, in Health Canada’s Licensed Natural Health Products Database.
Is “buffered” magnesium bisglycinate bad?
Not unsafe, but you get part oxide. The licences for Webber Naturals’ and CanPrev’s 200 mg “bisglycinate” capsules list magnesium oxide as a second source. Oxide was about 4% absorbed in one study. If you want only glycinate, look for a licence that lists bisglycinate alone, like Jamieson’s or Nutritionn’s.
How much magnesium is too much in Canada?
Health Canada’s upper limit for magnesium from supplements is 350 mg a day for anyone 9 and older; food does not count. Its monograph lets products give adults up to 500 mg, but anything over 350 mg must say what it is for and warn that you may get diarrhea.
Can I buy Nature Made, Thorne or Doctor’s Best magnesium glycinate in Canada?
Not on Amazon.ca when we checked: Nature Made, Doctor’s Best and Thorne’s glycinate had no listing. That is why the Canadian picks differ from our US guide.
Should I buy bisglycinate or citrate in Canada?
Either is fine for general use; no trial shows one works better. At list price, citrate is the cheaper buy here: Webber Naturals Magnesium Citrate 150 mg costs CA$0.30 per 300 mg against CA$0.53 for Jamieson. With either, check the licence for oxide. Canadian forms compared.
Which magnesium is best for sleep?
No form is proven best. Three small trials in older adults used 320 to 729 mg a day of oxide, citrate and effervescent tablets, and a 2021 review found people fell asleep about 17 minutes faster, with low-quality evidence. A 2025 trial of 250 mg as bisglycinate found a small effect.
